Fierce Disability Intro

Updated: Jun 20, 2024

For those who acquire a disability later in life, like me, with my stroke in 2023, the challenges can be even more significant. Suddenly, being labeled as "disabled" can lead to discrimination and barriers to finding employment.

When I first had my stroke, I was devastated. Aside from the physical limitations and struggles with speech and memory, one of the biggest challenges was navigating a world that wasn't built for someone with a disability.

I quickly realized that there were many misconceptions and stigmas surrounding disabilities, especially in the workplace. People assumed that because I had a stroke, I couldn't perform particular tasks or contribute to a team effectively.

They couldn't be more wrong.

In reality, acquiring a disability can bring unique skills and perspectives to the table. It forces you to think outside the box and find alternative ways to accomplish tasks. This kind of problem-solving and adaptability is precious in any work environment.

I want to help young neurodivergent folks, and this way, I want to have transparency about my current "disability" for the benefit of everyone my story. I hope that by sharing my experiences, I can help break down these misconceptions and encourage employers to see the value in hiring individuals with disabilities.
